meeting the IM
After 2 failed schedules, I finally got the chance to meet an IM. Prior to meeting one, I was fervently praying that I would not have to take insulin and that diet would suffice to my high glucose level...
We got to the clinic at around 2pm. G left work early to accompany me (he was as nervous as I am). I was the first patient (again) for the day, but while I was out looking for G another patient got in. The doctor arrived early at 2:20pm (this is early for me because most doctors let their patients wait for hours). She just ate some burger and let us in after. She's a young, jolly doctor. I think she's only on her late 20s or early 30s. I gave her the referral letter from my OB, showed her the results of my OGTT lab tests and my latest CAS. Her initial reaction was: 'Your glucose level is not that high BUT it is higher than normal. If you just got here earlier, you might not have to take insulin and diet would cover for the high value'
I was saddened with what she said because for me, it was my OB whose at fault. She didn't check on my weight during the early stage of my pregnancy. She allowed me to eat anything since I need to increase my weight, so and so... Going back, IM asked me if I have a healthcard that I might want to use. I showed her my Maxicare card, so she told me to ask for it to be approved. She also gave me a request form for a Random Blood Sugar Testing. She can do this on her clinic but if its covered by the health card, I might as well have it made in the laboratory.
We went to the other building for the approval of the card. I turned out that it is not covered but check-up/consultation is. I just asked for the approval since I can save much when I avail for the free consultation
When we got back to the clinic, IM did the RBT, the result is within normal, 120mg/dL. She asked my usual diet and recommended the amount that I should eat. Then she started discussing about the insulin injection. Schedule on when to inject it, how to do it, etc. She also asked if I can buy a Blood Glucose Monitoring System so that I can monitor my sugar from time to time.
After several instructions and notes, we ended. I'll have to record my glucose count for 6 instances. I'll see her again same time next week. I was like, whew! I really need to have insulin... now, instead of looking sites for tape drives, I am now searching for recipe sites. I need variations on what I can eat. I have to eat healthy and more of vegetables from now on...
only 6 weeks to go!!!

I know it is disappointing, but be glad that they are taking care of it. My GD went untreated in my first pregnancy and my son was born with hypoglycemia.
You are almost there...enjoy the rest of the trip!

It happens with doctors. Kaya dapat you have to do your homework before seeing them. Ako, I always surprise my doctors kasi I ask a lot of questions. But then it also helps I think that I have some medical background.
Watch what you eat na lang. Gestational Diabetes is pretty common among women while pregnant.
